How to become a top-notch taxi driver: 10 habits of a good taxi driver

Being a good taxi driver means getting the passenger to their destination safely, by a reasonable route and with a manner that makes them feel comfortable. Knowing the city and following the rules is the foundation; what turns a professional into a “top-notch taxi driver” is the details: smooth driving, a spotless vehicle, punctuality, discretion and knowing how to read what each customer needs.

The quality of a service depends not only on what is done but on how the person receiving it perceives it. That is why these habits are written from behind the wheel, for those who already work in a taxi or are about to start. If you are still at the first step, check the requirements for working as a taxi driver first.

The 10 habits of a top-notch taxi driver

  1. Drive for the passenger, not for yourself. Sudden acceleration, hard braking and abrupt lane changes are the first thing you notice in the back seat. Smooth driving conveys safety.
  2. Have the car ready before every job. Clean inside and out, an empty boot and a pleasant temperature.
  3. Greet the passenger and confirm the destination. Repeating the address avoids misunderstandings and shows attention.
  4. Suggest the route and respect the one the customer asks for. If there are roadworks or a traffic jam, explain the alternative before taking it.
  5. Listen more than you talk. Some passengers want conversation and others need silence; a glance and a short question are enough to tell.
  6. Look after the atmosphere. Music low or off, ask before turning on the radio and avoid strong smells.
  7. Help with the luggage without waiting to be asked, especially for older people or families with children.
  8. Be clear about the price. The fare applied, supplements and a receipt, without the customer having to ask.
  9. Be punctual for booked jobs. Arriving a few minutes early completely changes the experience for someone with a flight to catch.
  10. Keep learning. New streets, languages, first aid or assisting people with disabilities all make you better at your job.

Airport jobs, the acid test

Few journeys test a taxi driver as much as Barajas runs. The passenger is often short of time, with suitcases and sometimes with children; if they are arriving in Madrid for the first time, the driver is the first person they speak to. A top-notch driver confirms the terminal, allows a margin for traffic and does not make the customer feel rushed. For pickups at the terminal, the flight number also tells you where to wait and whether there is a delay.

Mistakes that cost points

  • Talking on the phone while driving or for the whole journey.
  • Bringing up politics, football or the customer’s private life without them inviting it.
  • Overpowering air fresheners, a problem we cover in taxi smells.
  • Arguing about the route instead of explaining it.
  • Assuming the customer does not want to pay by card.

How it shows from the back seat

Passengers can rarely explain why a driver struck them as excellent, but they sum it up in two phrases: “I felt safe” and “I didn’t have to worry about anything”. Behind those feelings are the habits above. If you are interested in the other side, how a customer recognises a professional, we cover it in how to spot a professional taxi driver, and we go through every moment of the journey in how to improve the customer experience in a taxi.

It is the way of working we look for in our transfers: official taxis, punctual pickups and a door-to-door airport transfer at a fixed price, €33 from inside the M-30.
