Forget parking problems with a taxi: why parking in central Madrid is so difficult

Parking in central Madrid is difficult for three reasons: almost all on-street spaces are regulated, paid and subject to a maximum stay; many of them are reserved for residents; and access for cars from outside is restricted in some areas by low-emission rules. The alternative is a public car park, which tends to be expensive for long stays. If you are going somewhere specific and coming back, a taxi drops you at the door and saves you the whole process.

How regulated on-street parking works

In the central districts and in many of the surrounding neighbourhoods, the Servicio de Estacionamiento Regulado (SER, the regulated parking scheme) applies. Broadly speaking:

  • Blue spaces: designed for turnover. Anyone can park by paying, but with a maximum stay.
  • Green spaces: priority for residents of the neighbourhood. Visitors, when they are allowed to use them, have a very limited time.
  • The charge is paid at the parking meter or with a mobile app and varies according to the car's environmental label.

The exact conditions (hours, maximum stays, prices) are set by the City Council and updated frequently, so it is worth checking them before you go. What does not change is the practical result: driving round looking for a space, keeping an eye on the clock and getting back to the car before the ticket expires.

Low-emission zones and public car parks

In the Distrito Centro, moreover, access for non-residents' vehicles is restricted and depends on the environmental label and on whether you are going to a public car park. If you get it wrong, the fine arrives by post weeks later. We explain how to get around that area in getting around the centre the best way.

Underground car parks solve the problem of finding a space, but not the cost: for a visit of several hours, or to leave the car for a whole afternoon, the bill soon mounts up. And on very busy days they fill up too.

Situations in which a taxi saves you parking

Hospital visits

Madrid's big hospitals have car parks in very high demand. A taxi drops you at the entrance you need and you can forget about a space for as long as your appointment lasts.

Theatre, concerts and football

When a show or a match ends, thousands of cars try to leave at once. A taxi picks you up with no queues in the car park.

Appointments at a set time

An interview, an exam or some paperwork. Arriving on time does not depend on finding a space.

Dinners and celebrations

If you are going to drink, the car should stay at home. And that way you do not have to go back for it the next day either.

The airport

Leaving your car for several days in a car park at Barajas has a cost that adds to the trip.

For sporting events, you will find specific advice in advantages of taking a taxi to a sporting event in Madrid.

Airport parking: a cost people forget

The clearest case is travel. If you go away for a week, the car spends seven days in a paid car park, and on top of that there is fuel and the toll on your time: parking, getting to the terminal and, on the way back, collecting the car when you are tired from the trip. With a taxi, the journey has a fixed price by area (€33 from inside the M-30, the rest on the airport fares page) and there are no further costs. Is it worth having a car if you live in the centre?

For many residents of the centre, a garage space costs almost as much as the car itself, and the car is rarely used. If you are thinking about it, own car or taxi gives you a way to do the sums with your own figures. And if you have already decided to do without the car for getting to the airport, see how pickup works in taxi in central Madrid.
