Tips for choosing the best taxi service in Madrid
Licence, a clear price before you get in, ways to book, the right vehicle and how the service responds if something changes: the criteria that really matter when choosing a taxi in Madrid.

To choose the best taxi service in Madrid, look at five things: that it is an official licensed taxi, that you know how the price is worked out before you get in (meter, the airport fixed fare or a fixed price when booking), that you can order it through whichever channel suits you and at any time, that the vehicle suits your group and your luggage, and that the service responds well when something changes, such as a delayed flight. There is no universal “best taxi”: the best one is the one that fits your journey.
Madrid has thousands of taxis, radio taxi dispatch companies, apps and pre-booked services. This guide helps you compare them sensibly, whether you are crossing the centre on a Tuesday afternoon or getting to Barajas at five in the morning.
First, make sure it is an official taxi
This is the starting point and there are no exceptions. An official Madrid taxi can be recognised by:
- its white bodywork with a diagonal red stripe on the front doors;
- the licence number displayed on the vehicle;
- the meter and the current fare table displayed inside;
- the green light on the roof when it is free.
Being official means the driver holds a municipal permit, the vehicle undergoes inspections and the journey is insured. VTC (private-hire vehicles booked through an app) are different: they are legal but work under other rules, as they cannot be hailed in the street and are always hired in advance. We explain this in the differences between taxis and VTC. What you should always avoid is unauthorised transport, especially offers made in the airport arrivals area: in the risks of a fake taxi you will see why.
Price: how to know what you will pay
This is the most common question and the one worth clearing up before you get in. In Madrid there are three ways of setting the price:
Meter with the municipal fares
This is the norm on urban journeys. Madrid City Council approves and periodically updates the fares, with different amounts depending on the time band and the day, and supplements in specific cases. The final price depends on distance and time, so a traffic jam makes it more expensive.
The airport fixed fare
Between the airport and the area inside the M-30, metered taxis apply a municipal fixed fare, whose amount is reviewed along with the other fares. Outside the M-30, the meter applies.
Fixed price with advance booking
Some services, like ours, set a price by area when you book. You see it before confirming, it does not depend on traffic and it is the same in both directions: from inside the M-30 it is €33, and each neighbourhood or town has its own on our airport taxi fares page. Its great advantage is predictability, especially if you are setting off from an outer neighbourhood or another town.
| How you order it | How the price is set | When it makes sense |
|---|---|---|
| Hailing it in the street | Meter (or the fixed fare if you are going to the airport from inside the M-30) | Short, spontaneous journeys in areas with plenty of taxis |
| At a taxi rank | The same as in the street | Stations, the airport, hospitals and nightlife areas |
| By phone or app | Usually the meter; some apps show an estimate | When no free taxis are passing or you want to be picked up at your door |
| With advance booking | Fixed price by area, known in advance | Airport trips, early hours, groups and high-demand dates |
Ways to order a taxi and availability
The best service is the one you can book without hassle when you need it. Consider:
- Channels. Phone, website, app or WhatsApp. If you do not feel like calling, you should be able to write: for example, order your taxi on WhatsApp with the address and time.
- Real opening hours. That they answer 24 hours a day, every day, including bank holidays and the early hours. That is when the difference shows most.
- Advance booking. For important appointments, being able to arrange it days ahead and not depend on a free taxi passing by.
- Clear confirmation. When you book you should receive the details of the service: address, time and, if it is a fixed price, the price.
The vehicle and the extras you need
Not all journeys are the same. Before choosing, think about:
- Number of passengers and luggage. A standard taxi takes four passengers with normal luggage. For five people or more, or with lots of luggage, look for a service that offers 7-seater taxis.
- Children. If you need a child seat, ask whether they provide one and confirm it when booking, stating the child's age.
- Reduced mobility. Madrid has wheelchair-accessible taxis; if you need one, request it specifically.
- Pets. Guide dogs can always travel; with other animals, check beforehand.
- Payment method. Card or cash and, if it suits you, paying online in advance.
Signs of a good taxi service
Beyond the basics, there are details that set a well-run service apart:
- A clear price before you confirm and no charges that turn up later.
- Punctuality and a heads-up if there is any delay.
- A contact available for last-minute changes, at any hour.
- A receipt or invoice if you need one; essential on business trips (for companies there is a dedicated guide in how to choose a taxi service for a business trip).
- Genuine reviews from other users that talk about punctuality, service and price, rather than a one-off experience.
If you are going to or coming from Barajas Airport
The airport journey deserves special attention, because a delay has consequences. In addition to the above, check that the service:
- asks for your terminal or flight number, so it drops you at the right one (T1, T2, T3 or T4);
- for arrivals, uses the flight number to check the terminal and confirm the meeting point, and has a channel for letting them know if the flight changes;
- gives you a fixed price both there and back;
- operates in the early hours, because many flights depart or arrive at times when there is no public transport.
That is exactly what we offer when you book your airport taxi: booking in three steps with the price in view, a 24-hour service and payment online or to the driver. And if you still have general questions about taxis, such as whether you pay for suitcases or whether you can choose the route, we answer them in the most frequently asked questions about taxis.
