The most frequently asked questions about taxis
How the price is worked out, whether you pay for suitcases, who chooses the route, how many people fit or whether the driver can refuse: the most common questions about taxis, answered.

Frequently asked questions about taxis almost always revolve around four topics: how much it costs and how you pay, what you can do during the journey, what rights and obligations passengers and drivers have, and how taxis work at the airport. In short: in Madrid the price is set by the meter according to municipal fares, except on journeys with a flat fare or a fixed price; the passenger can choose the route; seat belts are compulsory in the back too; and tipping is optional. Below you will find each answer in more detail.
If your question is about our service specifically (bookings, hours, ways to contact us), you will find it on our service FAQ page.
Price and payment
How is the price of a taxi in Madrid worked out?
On a metered journey, the fare combines an initial charge, a price per kilometre travelled and another for waiting time or slow-moving traffic. Madrid City Council sets the fares, which vary by time band and type of day (weekday, night, weekend or bank holiday), and may add supplements in specific cases. The current table must be displayed inside the taxi.
Is there a flat fare to the airport?
Yes. Between Barajas Airport and inside the M-30, metered taxis apply a municipal flat fare that is updated along with the other fares, so do not trust old figures: for years it was €30 and that is no longer the case. Outside the M-30 you are charged by the meter. With advance booking, on our service the journey from inside the M-30 has a fixed price of €33, and every area has its own in our airport fares. We explain it in depth in what you need to know about the €33 fare.
Do you pay extra for suitcases?
In a metered taxi, the supplements that can be applied are the ones listed in the official table displayed in the vehicle; if you are charged for something that does not appear there, ask for an explanation and the receipt. On our fixed-price journeys, luggage is included, whether it is one suitcase or four, as long as it fits in the vehicle.
Can you pay by card?
Yes, in Madrid taxis paying by card is normal, as is paying in cash. If you are going to pay cash for a short journey, it is best not to carry only large notes. On our service you can pay online by card when booking, or to the driver, by card or in cash.
Do you have to tip?
No. In Spain tipping in taxis is entirely optional. Many people round up the fare when the service has been good, but it is not expected.
During the journey
Who chooses the route?
The passenger. You can say which route you prefer and, if you say nothing, the driver must choose the most suitable one. On fixed-price journeys, the route does not affect what you pay.
How many people fit in a taxi?
As many as the vehicle's licence states. Most taxis take four passengers; for larger groups there are taxis with up to 7 seats, which are best booked in advance.
Are seat belts compulsory in the back seat?
Yes, for all passengers. We explain it in detail in do you have to wear a seat belt in a taxi?, including the case of children.
Can you smoke, eat or drink inside?
Smoking is banned in taxis, as on the rest of public transport. Eating or drinking is up to the driver: the right thing to do is ask first, especially if it is something that might stain or smell.
Can you travel with pets?
Guide and assistance dogs can always travel. With other animals, the decision is the driver's, so it is best to mention it when ordering the taxi and carry the animal in its carrier or properly restrained.
Rights and rules
Can a taxi driver refuse a fare?
Only in justified cases set out in the regulations, for example when the passenger endangers safety, is going to dirty or damage the vehicle or wants more people to travel than are authorised. We explain the reasons in my taxi driver refuses to take me: why?.
Do they have to give me a receipt?
Yes, if you ask for one. The receipt includes the licence details, and it is useful for making a complaint, recovering a forgotten item or claiming the expense from your company.
Where do I complain if I have a problem?
First, try to sort it out with the driver and ask for the receipt. If that is not possible, you can file a complaint through Madrid City Council's channels, giving the licence number and the date and time of the journey.
At the airport
Where do you get a taxi at Barajas?
Each terminal has its signposted taxi rank in the arrivals area. Always use the official rank and do not accept offers of transport inside the terminal.
Is it worth booking one?
If you are arriving in the early hours, with children, as a group or simply do not want to queue, yes: with your flight number the terminal is checked and the meeting point confirmed, and the price is fixed.
